Nick is a language consultant, writer and trainer who helps brands and businesses to find their voice and tell their stories. Until recently, he was creative director at The Writer. Now he does things on his own.
Among other things, Nick helped create and roll out several of the world’s largest tone of voice programmes. He’s also personally trained over 10,000 people to write more effectively. He’s helped government ministers write more clearly, and rock DJs write more rockingly.
All this means that Nick has seen up close how organisations use (and abuse) language, and how their writing both reflects and shapes their organisational cultures. He’s also seen the huge benefits businesses reap when they pay closer attention to how they write.
Way back before that, Nick wrote a book about toast, and was a cartoonist for Viz magazine.
Organisations are made of words — whether you’re at the top, on the front line or behind the scenes, everyone’s a writer at work these days.
And yet most businesses have a language problem: they blather on endlessly without saying anything. They turn off their customers with strangulated formality. And even though everyone *knows* jargon is bad and clarity is good… they still communicate like winning at Bullshit Bingo was the goal.
Nick has worked with brands and businesses all over the world to help them change the way they write, and — more importantly — the way their people *think* about writing. And he’s seen them reap huge benefits.
In his session, Nick will share stories, observations and practical tools to help you and your organisations write more effectively.
Don’t worry, though, he won’t just show PowerPoints slides and drone on about grammar. It’ll be good fun, interactive, and thought-provoking.
